The matter has reached before the HC in the wake of a petition filed by NFSA depot holders’ welfare association, Bathinda, Punjab. The petitioner body has been running fair price shops in the state of Punjab for the past around 5 to 30 years and have been distributing wheat under Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) as defined in National Food Security Act 2013.
It has been contended that the Central government under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGK) had allocated 236511.495 metric tonne (MT), which was calculated as quantity for three months after applying formula of 5 kg per person per month for 1,57,67,433 persons/units in Punjab who were eligible to get wheat under NFSA.
“However, the state authorities in the circular dated November 7, 2022, distributed wheat district wise and the total quantity to be distributed among all the districts of the state of Punjab was calculated as 212269.530 MT whereas government of India had allocated 23511.495 MT wheat,” the petitioner body has argued.
The petitioner body has sought directions for quashing the order dated November 7 whereby the state authorities have decided to allocate 212269.53 MT wheat under under the PMGKAY scheme instead of the allocated quantity.
The matter has now been adjourned for March 16 for further hearing.
