An advocate from Jabalpur Grishma Jain had filed a petition in the MP high court seeking its intervention to stop installation of Arjun Singh’s statue at the TT Nagar tri-section, from where a bust of martyr Chandrashekhar Azad was removed on the ground that it was creating problems for traffic on the road. He contended that the Supreme Court in 2013 had banned installation of statues on roads, footpaths, sideways and other public places. Chief secretary of the state, principal secretary of urban administration, collector and SP of Bhopal were made respondents in the petition.
In its reply to the petition, the state government said that the petitioner is a resident of Jabalpur and is an advocate by profession. He had filed the petition to get cheap publicity. Arjun Singh’s statue is not being installed at the place where Chandra Shekhar Azad’s bust was there and the place where the statue is being installed, it would not create any traffic hazard.
The division bench of Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Virendra Singh, in an interim order on March 3, 2022, ordered removal of statue from TT Nagar tri-section and also imposed a penalty of Rs 30,000 on the respondents, Rs 10,000 of which is to be given to the petitioner advocate for trying to slur him and remaining Rs 20,000 in the account of MP Legal Aid Board Authority. A review petition was filed against the order, which the court had rejected.
In the previous hearing of the case, the respondents had sought more time to deposit the cost imposed on them. When the matter came up for hearing on Monday, the court was informed that they had moved the apex court , challenging the decision through a SLP. Advocate Satish Verma appeared in the case on behalf of the petitioner.
