Chandigarh: The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday dismissed the plea challenging the criteria for admission to the MBBS course at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, under the defence quota.

Anil Mehta, the senior standing counsel, UT, said the SC has observed that the change in the policy was made way before the prospectus was out in the public domain.

“Notification came on July 15, 2022, whereas the prospectus was released on October 7, 2022. The SC has made it clear that rightful decision has been taken by the administration after considering the fact that UT pool seats are being thrown open for all defence category students those who don’t have any relation with Chandigarh,” Mehta said.

The admission process for MBBS seats under the UT Pool in GMCH will continue as according to the notification of July 15, 2002, implying that those candidates who are wards of serving defence personnel/ex-servicemen having permanent address of Chandigarh in their service record at the time of entry into defence services will only be eligible to apply for the state/UT pool for MBBS. The certificate for permanent address issued by competent authority will be considered as proof. The matter had reached the SC in the wake of a plea filed by Ananya Goswami.
